Rule 6- Don’t take yourself so damn seriously


  1. To me adding Mindfulness allows Calm to prevail. It does not in any way detract from the urgency, or severity of a given situation however it for me adds a “buffer” in which we are able to “think” and “act” . The alternative is Rush and React which is often not optimal when leading. I believe that Mindfulness is innately present in successful leaders, high performers in athletics as well. I suspect it is at play in achieving “Flow State” also.
  2. I tend to still fall into the trap of reacting, and being laser focus serious. There is a time for that however mindfulness may very well be the additive that allows everyone to breathe and think and ultimately lean forward. To think about it, if we leaders want our cultures to truly be of a leaning IN, Forward, Growth Mindset we must be vigilant to making it feel “Safe” to take these risks to everyone shouldn’t we? It starts with US, no matter if we like that fact or not. They are looking towards US for direction, motivation and ….Inspiration. “The Emperor has no clothes” IS NOT going to be what we need is it?
  3. Just this past week I have been tested upon returning from a trade show in which our only distribution partner extended a promotion not inline with our plan. Even worse is that when investigated we (my company) submitted the deal incorrectly. Yes reaction , haste kicked into high gear. Even regretablby self came to the forefront which serves us not at all. All of us need to remember its a team. We all make mistakes together, we all learn together, we all move ahead together. I slowed myself . Communicated my wishes and will follow up from here. Also I will highlight to my team that we all make mistakes and we all need to be the eyes and ears for helping each other double and triple check everything. Its ultimately about team.
